On a day that saw the Columbus City League extend the suspension of their winter sports, other Central Ohio schools were treated to an instant classic between the Whitehall Lady Rams and the Bexley Lady Lions. Both teams came in with modest records with Whitehall 2-3 and Bexley 2-1.
The game was exciting from the tip with the score moving back and forth as the teams took turns pressing their advantage.The game took a turn in the first half senior wing Jewel Watkins caught 3 quick fouls and had to sit the better part of the first and all of the second quarter. Still, with their leader sidelined the Lady Rams were able to keep pace behind the solid play of senior guard Charjae Brock (11pts) and Ry'Yair Smith (6pts). Bexley kept the jab out the first half with timely 3s from Mandy Young (18 pts) and Sofia Sherman (8pts) and led by 7 at the start of the third 21-14.
The two teams came out recharged in the second half with Bexley's precision offense and cohesive team defense allowing them to take an 11 point lead going into the 4th. Bexley had the game in hand but Coach Taylor's decision to go full court man after playing zone most of the game paid off as they forced 3 consecutive turnovers and scored off all 3. The two teams battled as Watkins poured in 25 of her game high 29 points in the second half culminated by a huge 3 to bring the Lady Rams to within 1 with under a minute left in the game. An untimely turnover by Bexley gave the Lady Rams the ball with under 10 seconds left in the game but a travel off the inbound ended their dream of a comeback as they fell 53-50.
